Our Core Principles

The Dartmouth Independent is committed to providing accurate, fair, and independent journalism to the Dartmouth and Upper Valley communities. These standards guide our editorial decisions and practices.

Accuracy

• We verify facts before publication and cite our sources.
• We distinguish clearly between news reporting, analysis, and opinion.
• We promptly correct errors when they occur and maintain a public corrections log.
• We do not knowingly publish false or misleading information.

Fairness

• We seek comment from all relevant parties before publishing.
• We present multiple perspectives on complex issues.
• We give subjects of critical coverage an opportunity to respond.
• We avoid conflicts of interest and disclose potential conflicts when they exist.

Independence

• We are not affiliated with Dartmouth College, any political party, or any advocacy organization.
• We do not accept payment for coverage or allow advertisers to influence editorial content.
• Our editorial decisions are made independently of any outside pressure.
• We clearly label sponsored content and distinguish it from editorial content.

Transparency

• We identify our writers and editors on our masthead.
• We explain our editorial processes when relevant.
• We maintain a public record of corrections.
• We respond to reader inquiries about our coverage.

Content Labels

Corrections Policy

When we make errors, we correct them promptly and transparently. Corrections are noted at the bottom of the affected article and logged on our corrections page.
