Ragged Mountain Resort in Danbury, New Hampshire has been sold to a group of local investors who say they intend to preserve the ski area’s character while considering future opportunities for expansion. The new ownership group, SF Mountain Co., consists of six longtime friends, several of whom grew up skiing at the resort.
“Ragged has always been more than a ski area — it’s been a community,” said Carl Rominger, a representative for SF Mountain Co., in a written statement. “We’re committed to building on what makes this place special — great skiing, great people and a genuine New Hampshire mountain experience.”
Pacific Group Resorts, the resort’s previous owner, will support the transition through the start of the 2025–26 ski season to help maintain continuity for both staff and guests. General Manager Erik Barnes will remain in place to oversee day-to-day operations.
“Ragged has come a long way in the last 18 years, and I’m proud of what we’ve built with our team,” Barnes said. “This transition brings in a group that deeply understands the mountain and the community around it, and I’m looking forward to helping carry that vision forward.”
SF Mountain Co. has confirmed it will honor benefits previously offered through Pacific Group Resorts, including access to partner destinations such as Jay Peak, Wisp, Mt. Washington Alpine Resort, Wintergreen, and Powderhorn.
Like other independent and mid-sized ski areas in the Northeast, Ragged Mountain has faced ongoing challenges, including rising infrastructure costs, unpredictable weather, and staffing difficulties. The resort, which opened in 1965, has a history of financial instability. It went bankrupt in 1974 and changed hands several times over the decades.
After its initial failure, the state briefly held ownership before transferring the property to private investors who operated it for around ten years before another shutdown. In 1988, developers Al and Walter Endriunas acquired and reopened the mountain, expanding uphill infrastructure with new trails on Spear Mountain and installing New Hampshire’s first six-person chairlift.
Pacific Group Resorts bought Ragged in 2007. During its tenure, the company explored various expansion plans, including extending skiing terrain onto adjacent Pinnacle Peak and reviving a former golf course. Although some trails were cut on Pinnacle Peak, no lift access was completed and the area is no longer shown as a future development zone on trail maps. However, commercial materials continue to mention the possibility of a phased expansion adding up to 604 more acres to the resort.
Today, Ragged Mountain features roughly 60 trails across 250 acres with a vertical drop of about 1,250 feet. The resort is located approximately 30 miles northwest of Concord via Route 4.
While the new owners have not announced any immediate changes, they emphasized a commitment to balancing growth with the preservation of the ski area’s distinct local identity. As SF Mountain Co. prepares for its first season at the helm, many in the Danbury area will be watching closely to see how the transition unfolds.
